Brothers Amateur Foursomes Open 12th & 13th June 2014

In blistering heat the field of 23 pairs arrived to contend this year’s National Brothers Amateur Foursomes Open, travelling from as far afield as Glasgow in the North and the Isle of Wight in the South.
On the Thursday at 9am the bomb start rocket interrupted the peace and quiet of Chislehurst to start the qualifying round which would determine the seedings for the afternoon quarter finals of both the main event (positions 1-8) and the associated Plate event (positions 9-16). Harry and Jack Matthews carded a very impressive 44 points to be seeded 1st with Ian and Alan Weddell 2nd with 39 points. 34 points in eighth position turned out to be the cut-off for the main event with scores of 33 and 32 points determining the Plate quarter-finalists.
Those finishing outside the top 16 would progress into the subsidiary Greensomes event on the Thursday afternoon, won by Darren (Chislehurst) and Danny Curtis (Knole Park) with 35 points.
Friday morning saw Chislehurst well represented with three of the four semi-finalists in the main event, Harry and Jack Matthews, Ian and Alan Weddell and Phil G and Dave Matthews, the results of which saw recent Chislehurst members Phil G and brother Dave Matthews facing former Crystal Palace and Millwall footballer Andy and his brother Dave Roberts (both from the London Club). The Matthews brothers prevailed in the afternoon heat, winning a closely fought contest 3&2.
The Plate final was contested by Chislehurst brothers Stephen and Robert Finlay and the heavyweight pairing of Mark (Chislehurst) and Terry (Badgemore Park) Killick when perhaps the heat and amount of golf played contributed to the final outcome, the Finlay brothers winning comfortably 5&4.
The Friday subsidiary 27 hole competition was won by Clive (Sandy Lodge) and Paul (Eltham Warren) Seager with Peter (Chislehurst) and Tony (Bridlington) Stevenson winning the afternoon 18 hole competition with 39 points.

Let’s hope to see all Chislehurst members with playing brothers entering next year's Open scheduled for Thursday 11 and Friday 12 June 2015.
